Alicia & Eric

June 20, 2008

I love it when I get to photograph weddings for Kristin Newman Designs as I am always guaranteed an outstanding wedding to photograph with unbelievable details, a totally unique and polished look, and a detailed time line. For those of you sitting on the fence about getting a wedding coordinator, do! They can be a God-send!

Alicia, a Canadian, and Eric, a South Carolina boy, met at graduate school and decided to get married at the quintessentially Southern Boone Hall Plantation this past Saturday. It was a hot one for the Canadian’s, but all I heard were ooh’s and aah’s over the history laden scenery. And boy do Canadians dance!

Heather Ahern of Gathering did a fabulous job with the flowers and decor and Cru Catering served up quite the feast. After a seated dinner, the guests partied to the Root Doctors, whom I am happy to say, did not play the Macarena.

Eric the groom, front and center, looks like movie star here. These guys were great sports and let me take a ton of photos of them even though it was close to 90-degrees out.

The flower girl, a niece of the groom (and well now the bride!), hold one of the bridesmaid’s bouquets.

My friend Amy Martin photographed this wedding with me. She captured this shot during the ceremony. I love how the design of the gate blurs in the background, it almost looks a bit mystical!

The dresses by Lula Kate looked great with the Spanish moss hanging off of the oak trees down the alee.

These butler cards and menus personalized with exquisite calligraphy, really added an extra touch of elegance.

The reception was held in the Cotton Dock. I love doing ambient shots like these.

The cake had the names of all the guests piped on to the icing. It was such a cool way to honor everyone who had come. I like how Alicia’s hand is resting on Eric’s arm.

Mark & Katie

June 19, 2008

I really enjoyed getting to know Katie and her mom Marie during the planning stages of Katie and Mark’s wedding. Marie was a remarkable mother of the bride with a great attitude, positive vibes, and a real love for helping Katie to plan her wedding.

The wedding took place at the Legare-Waring House in Charlestown Plantation, which was recently re-opened after extensive renovations. It’s a beautiful property and worth taking an afternoon to wander around the gardens and take photos of the magnolias.

Here’s Marie’s helping Katie with the final touches.

The dressing room at the Legare-Waring House is really nice- big and airy with lots of sunlight, which we photographers love!

I loved that even the dog statues were decorated with wreathes of flowers.

My very talented and creative assistant photographer, Jebb Graff, took this great photo of Katie and Mark walking back down the aisle as a newly married couple.

This is one of the ring bearers, who I think looks quite cute holding one of the bridesmaid’s flowers.

Must Love Dogs

June 18, 2008

I’ve had a lot of dog related things going on recently, including an upcoming job to photograph for Lowcountry Dog. I’m really excited about this as I’ve always had in the back of my mind to do a collection of photos of Charleston dogs. This article is about people and their dogs, so I am doing shots of them together… including some of Mayor Summey and his little pack of dogs.

…which incidentally reminds me of a shoot I did a couple years ago for Charleston Loves Pets (a supplement to Charleston Magazine), where my job was to get a shot of the shop cat at Boomer’s Books, which is now Blue Bicycle Books. (It’s a great used book store by the way, I highly recommend it!) And when Jonathan Sanchez bought it, the cat came WITH the store! Anyway, every time I’d get within a block of that store, Purdy, I believe his name is, knew and would go hide in the block-long store. It became a running joke between me and the owners about this cat, and I never did get a shot of it.

Anyway, here’s a new favorite shot of my extremely affectionate Vizsla, Bella. When she’s not tearing through the yard, she can be found stretched out across the floor or jumping into your lap.

Weddings and Anniversaries

June 14, 2008

My apologies for the lack of blog posts lately. It’s not for lack of material, it’s for lack of time! This has been the busiest Spring ever- both personally and professionally. But I can see my calendar thinning out a bit and I am welcoming the break and an opportunity to put up some more photos on this blog!

Recently, I was asked to photograph a 50th Wedding Anniversary 5-day long extravaganza for a VIP, who shall remain nameless for privacy reasons. This VIP flew in 55 guests on his personal jet and they are spending the week at the Sanctuary on Kiawah, soaking up the Lowcountry and all it has to offer, with nightly parties and dinners to celebrate.

The festivities began Wednesday night, once the guests had arrived, with a BBQ at Kiawah’s Mingo Point. All I can say is, “Wow!”. It’s a nature center and preserve by day and an amazing spot at night for an outdoor bbq with views over the river. Jim Simpson, of Adventures in Charleston, helped coordinate this party. There was a bluegrass band setting the vibe and oysters steaming on the side. A whole roasted pig was the talk of the group as these Northerners had never seen one before. The fixin’s were fresh and local with John’s Island tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, potato salad and collard greens!

eat. drink. be married.

June 9, 2008

At a wedding I shot down in Bluffton recently, they had the cutest idea. They put out chocolate chip cookies, to be eaten with a “shot” of milk. And they were on these clever napkins, which I thought were hilarious.
