Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dogs’ Tails

July 28, 2009

It seems as if I was on a roll of photographing little girls, and then the tide changed and I was getting calls from moms who want their little boys photographed. Suddenly, I was reminded of the differences between boys and girls and the poem about frogs and snails and puppy dogs’ tail came to mind! You better crank up the shutter speed when photographing little boys, because they sure move fast!

But I had so much fun with these photos for the Compher-Rice family last week! I had met them last year when we did beach photos out at the Isle of Palms. It’s amazing for me to see how kids grow each year both in size and personality. I hope to see you again in 2010!

Beach Portraits

July 24, 2009

I love doing beach portraits in the summer when families are in town for their summer vacations out at Folly, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s, Kiawah and Seabrook. For families that are here for a week, I try to schedule them early in the week so that there are rain dates built in and no one’s turned into a lobster yet.

Here are a few of my faves from a session earlier this week. Enjoy!

The Happy Baby Turns 2!

July 23, 2009

I was so excited to get a call from Nikki’s mom asking me if I could photograph her again for her 2nd birthday. I had taken photos of Nikki last July and had declared her the happiest baby on earth! You can see last year’s photos and her great big smiles here.

She needed a little extra time to warm up for her 2 year old photos, but once the bubbles and toys came out, Nikki  was all smiles. I love that she got to wear one of her favorite outfits and as a 2 year old, she has great taste. She is such a bright little girl and so much fun to photograph.

Here are some of my favorite photos form the photo shoot!

Caroline & Kyle’s Charleston Wedding

July 22, 2009

Caroline Goodman and Kyle McKinney’s Charleston wedding was a true Southern affair. What makes it Southern, you ask? First of all, there was an extra large wedding party, 29 including Kyle and Caroline! And I have to say that they were a wonderful bunch and great to photograph. Another quintessential Southern touch was the a capella gospel choir, Voices of Deliverance,  that came in at the end of the ceremony singing “Oh, Happy Day!”. If that doesn’t make your eyes well up, I don’t know what will. They are amazing.

The entire wedding day flowed perfectly. Hannah Alexander of WED was the coordinator and their crew pulled this wedding off with out a hitch, as always. After the ceremony at the Trinity Methodist Church, guests were transported on the classic Charleston white trolleys to the Daniel Island Club for the reception.

Kyle and Caroline had a special first dance prepared, and let me tell you, they were amazing! There were several dips and totally coordinated moves. I think we will see them next on “Dancing with the Stars”. After the first dance, guests were seated for the four-course meal, which also included the toasts and cutting of the cake.

The band, The Maxx, played an awesome rendition of a Michael Jackson song, which I do not remember the name of. But it was so fun to see everyone, young and old, out on the dance floor singing along! It was a reminder as to how timeless his music is. I enjoyed working with Alan Daly of Crown Alley Films, based out of Charlotte. He does contemporary style wedding “movies”. He totally made me laugh with his Irish accent and calling the guys “lads”.

At the end of the night, Caroline and Kyle left under a canopy of blown bubbles and sped off on their new path together in a sweet Rolls-Royce. Congrats Mr. & Mrs. McKinney!

And now, for a sneak peek of the photos! Guests can pre-register with Pictage.com so they will be notified when all the wedding photos are online. www.Pictage.com/654305

Caroline’s bouquet was wrapped with a handkerchief, bearing her new name, “Mrs. Kyle McKinney”. Attached was a special bumblebee brooch that belonged to her sister.

The ring bearer looking very GQ. I hope they show these photos of him at his own wedding one day! ring_bearer2

Caroline & Kyle never saw each other before the wedding, but wanted a moment to hold each others’ hand before the ceremony began.

The ceremony took place at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Meeting Street. I’m loving the fish eye view so you can see the ornate decor on the ceiling.

Every time I hear the Voices of Deliverance, my eyes well up! They came into the church and up the aisle at the end of the ceremony singing, “Oh, Happy Day!”

Woo hoo! Mr. & Mrs. Kyle McKinney and the wedding party! wedding_party2

The photos of the bride and groom after the ceremony are my favorite part of the wedding day. There’s such a special energy between them then and it’s the first time they have a moment to themselves after the ceremony. I get to be witness to that moment.

It’s a gorgeous church too!

Caroline & Kyle had some serious dance moves! They tore up the dance floor at the Daniel Island Club.

The band was pretty awesome too. They’re called “The Maxx” and they are out of Atlanta.

The Moments in Between

July 18, 2009

The Gangel’s came to Folly all the way from Bucyrus, Kansas. I always love hearing how people get my name when they call me for a beach photo shoot and they are from out of town. Their son-in-law-to-be spent a few summers at Folly and still has friends here. He called a friend for a referral for a photographer and was given my name. Yeah for word of mouth advertising!

There were 19 people in the group and lots of families to photograph. Here are a few of my favorite candids that I shot in between the group photos.

Painting and Unravelling

July 16, 2009

I’m taking two new art classes and they both started this week. One is an acrylic painting class at Redux and the other is a photography and writing course called “Unravelling“. This class is designed to unlock your brain a bit, shed the layers of inhibition and to get those creative sparks going again.

I’ve been spending a lot of time on my porch in the evenings taking photos and walking around with my camera everywhere I go. I kind of like being back in “school”.

Big Smile on a Little Girl

July 15, 2009

I recently had the pleasure of photographing one of the most animated and genuinely happy little girls I’ve ever met. Dan Dan is originally from China and was recently adopted by a very lucky couple from Kentucky. They brought her to Charleston for her first trip to the beach and wanted to have some family photos taken to celebrate it. Every time I look at these photos of her, they make me smile.

4th of July

July 13, 2009

For the 4th of July, I returned to High Rock Lake, NC to spend the 4th with my sister’s family. It was my second year in a row celebrating with the ever-growing Esposito clan. This year’s celebrations turned into a family reunion and I was one of 50+ guests. The entire weekend was spent swimming, boating, tubing, watching fireworks, having water fights, and for me- taking photos of all the kids. I tried to get shots of each of them individually and left corralling them into the big group shots to their “Pop and Gam”. Here are my favorites of each!

Liz & Bladen’s Wedding Slideshow

July 13, 2009

Since putting up a slide show from Fran & Geoff’s wedding, I have had several people ask me about putting together slide shows from their weddings as well. Here’s another one to enjoy from Liz & Bladen’s wedding back in May at Boone Hall. You may remember having read about their Southern soiree here!
