Kris & Jon WED at Pepper Plantation- The Ceremony

September 30, 2009

This past weekend, I had a lot of fun photographing Kris & Jon’s wedding at a killer new venue in Awendaw, Pepper Plantation. As much as I love the William Aiken House and Boone Hall, it’s also fun to get to shoot somewhere new. In addition to having a gorgeous bride & groom, there were great oak trees, a horse pasture, lake, dock and a modern barn-style venue as the backdrops.

Hannah Alexander and the team from WED put together a gorgeous event. Peacock feathers were a central theme, from the invitations to the bouquet and boutonnieres. Navy bridesmaids dresses and navy and celadon green linens carried the colors of the peacock feathers throughout the event.

Granville’s Catering had a delectable blueberry mojito signature drink for guests to sip upon their arrival. Who’s going to pass that up? It made me long to be a guest so that I could try it.

The ceremony took place on the lawn overlooking the lake. And even though the sky was heavy and threatened to pour, it didn’t rain the entire night. The Doctors Leake were married without a hitch! Here are some of my favorite shots from the first half of the day. Stay tuned as tomorrow I will blog the crazy dancing shots and lots of candids from the reception!

Sparkly details on Kris’s wedding dress make for fun photos.

Kris had some tried and true bridesmaids who were on the ball. Special kudos go to her sister, who was maid-of-honor.

Did you know that in Asia, the peacock feathers are considered auspicious and protective?

Kris was one of the most calm and cool brides ever! After swatting a mosquito and getting blood on her white dress, there were no tears or tirades. Her sister ran for the Tide stick, did a little dabbing and the dress was back to perfect in a matter of seconds. Phew!

I love this photo of Jon. It was moments before the ceremony began and he was waiting in the wings, so as to not see Kris. Look at that grin!

Featured on Blue Moon Event’s Blog

September 26, 2009

I was excited to see that Calder at Blue Moon Events has herself a new blog from which to showcase all the amazing weddings she designs. And I was thrilled to see that photos from an Indian/Christian wedding we photographed were on there!

The uber talented and endlessly creative force known as Fuzzco did her website and blog design. They rock.

Here’s a snipet of our photos on there… but check out the Blue Moon Events blog to see more!

Happiest of Days

To Aimee and Gokul Gondi, whose double Indian/Christian weddings and celebrations put the “P” in party! We are thrilled to find that Blue Moon Events is the de facto “go-to” for planning Indian affairs, as we love pushing our sleeves up and learning about the myriad of meaningful customs and nuances within the culture of such a geographically diverse country.

Laos, Revisited

September 23, 2009

I got a fresh batch of Moab Entrada 17×22 paper in recently. It is my favorite paper to print on. It’s a matte, heavyweight (300g) paper and you can print on both sides, if you want to cut it up and make postcards or something like that. I love this paper as it allows for great color saturation and I’ve got my Epson 4000 & Mac calibrated to print on it beautifully! (I also happen to love Moab, Utah, which I always think of when I use this paper.)

In the studio, I have a couple of wire lines that I use to hang my prints up, kind of like how you hang the washing on a line. Having some of my favorite shots printed and hung was a bit of an eye-opener for me. I instantly recognized that I had a certain aesthetic, which I’ll talk about in a future post.

What having a fresh pack of paper to print on caused me to do was to go through my photos to see what I’d like to print. There are some shots from a recent bridal portrait session I was really excited about and then there were my photos from my trip to SE Asia that I took last December that I decided to peruse. I have yet to do much with these photos, in terms of printing them, showing them off, blasting slides hows of them all over my iPhone, Facebook page, etc. There’s part of me that feels badly that I haven’t done much with them, until now.

It goes back to the post on editing that I wrote a few weeks back, about how time makes you view your photos differently. Nine months on, I look back on these photos and I can almost feel exactly what I felt when I took them. I skipped quickly through some shots from Hanoi, as my experience there was gray, dreary and I was all alone at Christmas time. Blah. But the shots from Luang Prabang, Laos, I love! Seeing as I have already posted photos from Laos here and here, I wanted to put up a few different shots for today. Enjoy!

P.S. Your Daughter’s Hot!!!

September 23, 2009

To de facto, go-to wedding mag. if you are getting married in Charleston, SC or the  Lowcountry is, without a doubt, Charleston Weddings. It is created and produced by the same talented crew that put together Charleston Magazine, Charleston Home, WNC and G. Clever, yet informative articles, superb photography, and high print quality, isn’t that what we all want out of a great magazine?

Charleston Weddings is printed but twice a year and their Winter 2009 issue recently hit the stands. I was thrilled to see that they’d used one of my photos for the “Wedding Album” section on the back page.

Here’s the cover, so you know which magazine to run out and buy!

charleston_weddings_coverblog

The back page photo is one I took at Mary Frances Prosser & Andrew Southerland’s wedding back in September of 2008. You may remember seeing the blog post about their wedding here! They had a cool Polaroid photo booth and a book  for guests to sign next to their photos. Andrew, the groom, and Mary Frances’ dad took a photo together and wrote notes to each other on the page. Mary Frances’ dad wrote: “I love you Andy” -New Dad Ted. Andy wrote “You’re the father-in-law I never had. P.S. Your daughter’s hot!!!”

And here is my ad in this issue. It is a shot I took at Jay Gnau and Chris Peter’s wedding in Beaufort, SC in April of this year. You can relive their awesome wedding through the photos on my blog here. Jay’s bridesmaids wore white LulaKate dresses with a pink sash and a brooch and the wedding was coordinated and designed by WED.

Published in BRIDES

September 18, 2009

I am honored to say that I have a photo in the current issue of BRIDES, which is the September/October 2009 issue. The photo is of a scrumptious cupcake and is the opened for the “Parties & Planning” section.

I am so excited to have a photo in their magazine and I love that it’s a detail shot of food as I love photographing details, food, and especially sweets!

This photo was taken at Brannon Coleman and Jason Earle’s rehearsal dinner. In fact, you may remember seeing the original blog posts on their rehearsal dinner and from the wedding. Thanks to them for having such a great cupcake tier to photograph!

Rhyne Family

September 16, 2009

A lot of the family portrait sessions I do are for families that are from out of town, but who are visiting one of our gorgeous beaches for the week. So it was a nice surprise to be contacted by a local family looking to have their portrait taken. The Rhyne’s are going to be doing double duty with the photos however as Dr. Craig Rhyne is running for political office in Mt. Pleasant, the election is in November, and he wanted a family photo for his campaign.

We took these out at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant.

Kristiana and Justin : The Party

September 15, 2009

We arrived the the reception at Alhambra Hall to the most gorgeous light ever! Luckily, my 2nd photographer, Jebb, had arrived earlier and was grabbing shots of the guests enjoying drinks on the lawn. Kristiana and Justin wanted to grab a few photos down by the water when the light was just right. You can never plan a sunset, or how gorgeous it will be, but we really lucked out this night!

Heather Ahern of Gathering Flowers + Event Design and her crew had set up the decor for the reception and it looked great in all the pinks, reds, oranges and yellows. The lanternes and draped fabric really dressed up the interior and made for a great backdrop for the photos. The catering was done by Granvilles.

Oh Snap! Photobooth was on hand for catching hilarious photo booth photos of everyone for the guest book. The cool thing was that the guests get to keep a strip of photos for themselves and then an identical strip of photos goes intot he guest book ad the guests can write next to their photos.

Two 3 Ways is one of the most fun wedding bands around. I love them because they play a lot of cover songs and less of the YMCA/Shout! typical wedding play list. Since Michael Jackson died, I have not been to a wedding where the band didn’t play an MJ song. The really interesting thing is how it gets EVERYONE on the dance floor! Young and old, everyone will dance like crazy to a Michael Jackson tune.

The sun sets over the harbor and we had gorgeous light!

I love the orange vases. They are a funky eye-popping touch, especially against the champagne linens.

Gifts to the guests were donations made in each of their names, to help various animals.

Color! Their wedding cake was flanked with butterflies, carrying their colorful theme.

I love getting photos of the venue at dusk when there is still a hint of color in the sky.

I had my camera on a tripod to take the above photo of Alhambra Hall. While I was waiting for the exposure, this praying mantis jumped onto my camera! With my second camera, cranked to 2500 ISO, I took this photo of the little guy hanging out on my Nikon D700. I think he’s posing.

Kristiana’s parents had an absolute ball at her wedding! Here is her dad tearing up the dance floor.

Not to worry, the guests had a great time too!

At the end of the night, little take home boxes held a midnight snack for the guests.

Kristiana and Justin : The Ceremony

September 14, 2009

There were so many photos that I wanted to blog from Kristiana and Justin’s wedding that I’ve decided to split  it into two posts, ceremony and reception. And because photographing their wedding was so much fun and full of photographic opportunities, it has inspired me to write a list of ideas to consider when creating the perfect environment for great wedding photos. That’s coming soon…

I have to give credit to Marni Rothschild Durlach, who was one of the bridesmaids, for helping Kristiana to pick some of the greatest vendors in Charleston for her wedding. I have no doubt that Kristiana would have had Marni photograph her wedding, had Marni not been in it!

Kristiana and her 4 bridesmaids began the day by getting their hair and makeup done in a suite at Charleston Place. Leslie Moore of Moore Makeup did their makeup. Once the girls were ready, they boarded an Old Charleston trolley for a ride to St. Johannes Lutheran Church.

Kristiana wore a gorgeous gown from Maddison Row.

Her engagement ring was a gorgeous vintage piece.

01maddison_row

Heather Ahern of Gathering Event + Flower Design put together the lush and colorful flowers and designed the event.

03gathering_flowers

The color palette popped! Champagne colored bridesmaids dresses along with dyed fuschia shoes and bouquets of reds, pinks and oranges made for some crazy eye-poppingcolor. I loved it.

04bridesmaids

Not to be outdone by her bridesmaids, Kristiana wore a pair blue Stuart Weitzman heels.

Check out the blue altar! Between that and the red front door, I was pretty much in color heaven.

Dr. & Dr. Ellett! Congrats!

We headed to Waterfront Park for a few photos of the wedding party before continuing on to Alhambra Hall for the reception.

And then the wedding party jumped back on the Old Charleston trolley for the ride to the party! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s feature… the reception at Alhambra Hall!

The Boys

September 11, 2009

So yesterday, I posted the girls’ photos. Today, it’s time for the boys!

I had taken a lot of candid shots during the week at the beach, but I also wanted to get a few classic shots of the boys and my brother’s family. We’d planned the photo shoot, then canceled it as it looked like a huge storm was moving in. But the clouds just rolled on by and the light was fantastic, so we hustled to get everyone dressed and outside. I’m glad we did!

I realy like the crisp dress shirts the boys are wearing. Those paired with the beach setting and and the fact the photos are in b&w remind me of the classic photos of the Kennedy kids at Cape Cod. These boys are very regal!

Girly Girls

September 10, 2009

Wedding planners give me shocked looks when I tell their clients how fast I turn around the wedding photos. There are a myriad of reasons for the fast turn-around…, but one of them is that I thrive on a deadline. When there is no deadline, I can let things sit and then the procrastination takes on a life of its own, which is way more painful than actually getting down to business and doing some editing. All of this to explain why it has taken me forever to get around to editing photos I took my nieces and nephews at the beach way back at the beginning of August.

On the flip side, I do think that I see photos differently when there’s a bit of time and distance between shooting them and editing them. In that time, I’ve forgotten about any technical glitches or missed moments and the distance creates a bit of nostalgia for the time and place.

Which actually leads me to another question based on an article I read last night on CNN.com called, “I’ve Got the Post-Wedding Blues”. The article is about the emotional low a lot of couples feel after their wedding day. One of the couples talks about the joy of reliving the event through the photos, but how that just reiterates the fact that the big day is over and life goes trundling on. Sooo…. My question is: “Is there an ideal time to deliver the wedding photos to a newly married couple?” I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

Back to the photos at hand….

These are my girly girl nieces whom I love and adore. I would have put up a fit if I had to wear a dress at their age, but they love clothes and all things pink. They are a lot a lot of fun to photograph and this is 7 years running on taking their photos. Here are a few of my faves.
