Parker & Elizabeth’s Engagement Session: Charleston

May 28, 2010

It’s amazing how interconnected we all are. I had gotten a call from Parker & Elizabeth about photographing an engagement session for them here in Charleston, as their wedding was going to be held in Raleigh in the fall. Unfortunately, I was unavailable for their wedding date, but I mentioned that my sister lives in Raleigh.

We embarked on the engagement session in downtown Charleston and were talking about Raleigh and where my sister lives and wouldn’t you know it…. Elizabeth has actually babysat for my nieces?! They live blocks apart, how crazy is that? And Parker, well his mom lives in my hometown of Hickory, NC. Our conversation was full of coincidences!

We had fun scouting the streets of the French Quarter in Charleston for great backdrops for their portraits. These two were quick to smile and after an initial wave of nerves, fell right into the fun of it.

Stems is Full of Color!

May 27, 2010

Stems has been a busy spot recently with all the craze of the wedding season going on! In addition to weddings, events and various flower arrangements, Anne is also busy teaching classes. The class schedule is posted online here and people LOVE them! There’s still time to sign up, so feel free to call.

I took a few shots for Anne the other day and I believe these were for a bridal luncheon. Can you get over these incredible peonies?!

Garden & Gun Magazine

May 25, 2010

Have you seen the latest issue of Garden & Gun? It has this very tasty looking strawberry daiquiri in a julep cup on the cover and it’s all about the South invading NYC. It’s a great issue to read if you haven’t already and did you know that it has a few of my photos in it? (Shameless self-promotion, I know!) This issue also has some great architectural photos of “A Modern Fish Camp” by my friend and fellow photographer, Julia Lynn.

This is the latest issue. (Cover photo by Michael Turek)

I took a few photos for “Due South”, which features an article about Southern Breweries including a few in NC, MS, GA and KY.

And there are a few book shots I did for the book reviews. I haven’t read “The Help”, but everyone says I should.

As I flipped through the magazine, I was reminded of how connected the South is. I did not take this photo of Hunter Lingle and Jennifer Dixon, the power duo behind the designer label Hunter Dixon. But I did photograph Hunter’s wedding last October here in Charleston, SC at Lowndes Grove. You may remember her wedding photos here and here.

Rehearsal Dinner at the Creek Club in I’on

May 24, 2010

I just realized that I forgot to post these photos from Courtney & Jack’s rehearsal dinner back in April at the Creek Club in I’on. Jack’s sister planned the whole shin dig and the weather was perfect for the oyster roast they held outside. An acoustic guitarist played some tunes and guests enjoyed their drinks and oysters as the sun set.

The Creek Club is right along the Cooper River and there’s a great dock where you can walk out over the water. It’s a great spot to show off the Lowcountry at its finest.

Are these not the most precious cupcakes, an homage to Jack’s pug? Or perhaps their called “Pugcakes”?!

The oysters were cooked on sight and poured out onto the table steaming hot.

To me, nothing says “Lowcountry” like Spanish moss hanging from the trees!

Bring on the oysters! Jack’s family must’ve grown up devouring these things as they were lined up and ready to eat!

Bryan Deel, my second photographer, took this great shot of Courtney’s parents walking down the dock.

Will You Marry Me?

May 22, 2010

Yesterday, I had the pleasure (and excitement!) of photographing a real life marriage proposal. Ty had emailed me several weeks in advance and had all the details laid out of how and where it was going to happen. My job was to be there, incognito, and capture it as it happened.

Though I’ve photographed proposals before, I wasn’t prepared for how nervous I was going to be. I wasn’t worried about her saying “Yes” (I figured he had that covered), I was just worried about remaining inconspicuous in the courtyard at the Jasmine Inn. Luckily, Bryan came along with me and played decoy. Hopefully we looked like a happy couple enjoying the romantic late afternoon courtyard and eying the table of champagne, strawberries and flowers set up for these two.

The moment all happened pretty quickly and there was a lot of excitement and tears. I’m happy to know that we could play a part in helping it all come together so nicely and capture those smiles!

Congratulations you two!!!

Newborn Portraits on Canvas

May 21, 2010

Oooh! It’s a baby craze over here. To be honest I wasn’t all that interested in newbies until I found myself “in the family way” and it’s pretty much all I can think about now. I’m amazed at how quickly they change. You always hear that, but the difference between a newborn and a 3-month old is phenomenal. I’m not sure what the equivalent is in “adult years’, but sometimes I hardly recognize the tots three months down the road.

Here is one of the sweetest and most compliant newborns I’ve ever met. He was game for all kinds of photos and barely made a peep. I love this canvas collection we put together of photos form his newborn session and I had to share it with you. The canvas collections can be designed in all different sorts of formations. Call or email me if you are interested to know more!

Catherine & Adam at the William Aiken House: Part Two

May 20, 2010

So yesterday, you hopefully got to enjoy Catherine and Adam’s wedding photos from their ceremony at the William Aiken House. And today, we get to check out the raving reception!

Luke Wilson Special Events coordinated the affair and all the guests had to do was to come and enjoy themselves! Dinner was served inside the house and then the reception fully kicked off after the cake cutting. The band Soul Fish had an excellent repertoire of songs and really got everyone out on the dance floor with out any cheesy gimmicks. This crowd was ready to party, so it wasn’t that hard to get them dancing.

I don’t normally post the group photos or formal shots, but I had to show off this wedding party. I thought they looked rather stunning!

Adam leads the charge of groomsmen who all got ready at the Old South Barber Shop. You can tell by those super smooth shaves.

Mr. & Mrs.!

15_William_aiken_wedding_20

It’s always fun when there are really good dancers that tear up the dance floor and help to get the party started.

16_William_aiken_wedding_7

A late night snack of sliders were not complete with out the Auburn napkins you see. Go Tigers! (I admit, I had to look up the mascot!)

17_William_aiken_wedding_8

Soul Fish played all night and were very brave to ask all the bridesmaids along with Catherine on stage to hep play the drums, beat the cow bell and dance. it was quite a sight! Byan Deel, who was helping me photograph, took this photo from behind the band with the fisheye!

18_William_aiken_wedding_9

Who wouldn’t want their names up on the marquee at the American Theater? How cool is that?!

19_William_aiken_wedding_12

There was some fierce competition for the bouquet.

20_William_aiken_wedding_18

These two are so elegant.

I love sparklers. Not all venues allow them, thank goodness the William Aiken House does.

Catherine & Adam at the William Aiken House: Part One

May 19, 2010

I first got to know Catherine and Adam back in January when I photographed their engagement session in downtown Charleston. You might remember seeing it here. I loved how fashion savvy Catherine was in her orange dress and Adam was looking very dapper that day too. So it was no surprise on their wedding day to see that this couple knew how to get married in style!

Their wedding weekend began the night before with a rehearsal dinner at Magnolias. I love photographing rehearsal dinners as they are like mini-previews of what is to come the next day. It’s a great way for me to see who all the family and close friends are and I always love hearing the toasts as well!

Catherine and Adam were married at the William Aiken House in downtown Charleston. The ceremony took place outside. It threatened to rain and so for the occasion, Luke Wilson and Megan Morgan of Luke Wilson Special Events, event planners extraordinaire, was sure to have beau-coups of white umbrellas on hand. A light shower before the ceremony began brought out all the umbrellas, which looked really cool as guests shared them to keep dry. But the rain quickly passed and the umbrellas came down, only to be thrown back up at the very end of the ceremony. These stylin’ umbrellas were a great way to turn lemons into lemonade!

These photos take you through the getting ready to the ceremony. Enjoy all of their lovely details and tomorrow we will showcase the reception!

I’m thinking that this photo needs no explanation!

A wedding planner friend of mine just posted a blog post about how rings photographed with the flowers was cheesy. I beg to differ Miss Calder! I love this photo of their rings nestled within a luscious bouquet by Timeless Designs.

Family Beach Portrait: Sullivans Island, SC

May 18, 2010

Today’s feature is on some of my favorite girls (and guy!) whom I had the pleasure of photographing recently on Sullivans Island. I learned how to photograph kids by practicing on these girls, as they are in fact, my nieces! Luckily I have a sister who was willing to loan them out as guinea pigs for multiple photo shoots over the years.

We normally do their family beach portraits on our family beach vacation every August in preparation for their Christmas card. But seeing that they were here and I’ve got a busy summer ahead, we figured it would be better to get these photos done now.

Courtney & Jack’s Charleston Wedding: Part Two

May 17, 2010

This the colorful “part two” post on Courtney & Jack’s wedding, a follow up to the “part one” post that I released here.

After their ceremony at Trinity Methodist Church, Courtney and Jack boarded their horse and carriage for a trot on over to the recently renovated Memminger Auditorium for their colorful and visual feast of a reception!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Memminger Auditorium is a “black box” theater, a blank slate of sorts. Of course the options are endless as to what you may do with this blank slate, but it requires real skill and vision to turn it into a stunning work of art. It was a perfect opportunity for Kristin Newman Designs to let their imagination run wild and create a stunning backdrop to Jack & Courtney’s reception. Kristin Newman Designs enlisted the help of several local artists to help bring it all together:

Florals & Design: Gathering Floral + Event Design

Fabric Designs: Blossoms Events

Lighting: TEC Technical Event Company

The Memminger was visually split into two halves, a soft pink half for the sit down dinner and an electric fuchsia and blue side for wild and crazy dancing. It was the perfect way to keep guests fully entertained the entire time.

Courtney made for a stunning bride!

I loved this. Courtney’s grandfather went to the other side of the car and watched with his sparkler still burning. Congratulations Jack & Courtney Woodall!!!
