Smitten Magazine The Allure of Couture {Behind the Scenes}

September 27, 2011

I thought it might be fun to give a little behind-the-scenes look from my perspective for “The Allure of Couture” feature in the latest issue of Smitten. I’m just going to come out and admit that this photo shoot was a rather defining moment in my career. I’m probably breaking all the rules of self-promotion 101 by admitting this, but I was scared sh*tless by this shoot.

I have photographed models before and countless brides, but when I walked into the Rice Mill that day and there were 10 models (up from 5, which was the original plan), I had one of those incredibly insecure moments where I thought… “What if I just walk out? I’m not sure I can do this.” The pressure, people, the pressure!

Not only were there 10 models there, one which came all the way from Raleigh with her mom, but there was a huge team of creative artists whom I really admire and did not want to disappoint. (See the bottom of the post for a list of the  talented(x100) ladies who put together this shoot). I walked out to my car to catch my breath, called Bryan for a quick pep talk and then headed back in with the knowledge that if I could wrangle wedding parties of 30, I could handle this too. I was also very grateful in the knowledge that my friend and fellow photographer Jennifer Bearden would be there, ready to assist me.

While Pamela and Tanesha worked their magic on the models and created hair styles that I didn’t even know were possible, I scoped out the digs. A little intimidated by Lindsay of Maddison Row at first, I quickly realized her incredible skill of getting things done. Who else could wrangle up 10 designer dresses form the likes of Vera Wang, Carol Hannah and Anne Bowen for a shoot like this?! She is a girl who knows what she wants and had a shot list in mind.

I always like to start with the hardest shot, which not only gets it off my plate, but also gets the momentum rolling. Do you know Hollie Wood, of Hollie Wood Style? She is a character unto herself. Incredibly resourceful and with a finely tuned aesthetic, she helped to prop the shots not only with furniture, but with her personal vintage jewelry collection. And Della, the ever positive head honcho behind this shoot is a dream. She’s a catalyst. The fact that she trusted in each of us to do our jobs and let us be as creative as we wished is a pretty big allotment from a magazine editor.

In order to give this shoot my “all”, I started to remind myself of certain things. Namely, it was the fact that this was an incredible opportunity and a full-on fashion shoot is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I channeled my inner Annie Leibovitz and went for it. You know what I learned? Models are really awesome to photograph. They require very little direction and just intuitively move their bodies in interesting ways. Fascinating! I learned a lot from them that day.

This is starting to run on, so I will wrap things up with a nice little conclusion for you and that is this: You have to put yourself in uncomfortable situations in order to grow. Sometimes the thought is hard to bear, but it will make you hardier and more dimensional, and you sure will feel good about yourself when it’s done!

The Team:

Lindsay Nowak of Maddison Row, Expert on bridal fashion, forward thinking and go-getter

The Models, Unfortunately, I do not have their list of names. But WOW! I was very spoiled and thoroughly enjoyed working with these talented ladies!

The Rice Mill, historic building on the Ashley with a killer view that you can dress up or down!

Bridal Luncheon Detail Shots {Kristin Newman Designs & Gathering}

September 26, 2011

Sometimes I think that if I could fill all the weekends when I am not photographing weddings with the job of just shooting the gorgeous “details” of a wedding, I’d have it made. You see, as much as I love being the constant observer and anticipating the “decisive” moment, I am also a fiend for the other end of the spectrum, set-up and detail shots. Perhaps wedding photography is the ultimate path for me as it allows me to combine lifestyle, editorial and photojournalist photography all into one collection of images.

I am lucky to live in Charleston, SC as it holds some of the most talented wedding designers I know. It is amazing not only what they come up with, but the fact that they build these environments in less than a day. Then, their artful environments only gets to be enjoyed for the duration of the event before being broken down and filed away for the next time. It’s kind of sad when you think about it!

Here are a few detail shots from Anne Marie’s bridal luncheon that took place on the morning of her wedding. Kristin Newman Designs and Gathering Events + Floral Design created this for her. Who wouldn’t love getting an invitation to this?!

Week 8: The Weeks Pass Slowly but the Year Flew By

September 22, 2011

I love these little camo shorts. Looking at this photo makes me realize that Seamus is not a baby anymore. He’s a toddler now and I am a little sad and wistful for the old days. (sniffle, sniffle)

Anne Marie & Edward {Bethel United Methodist & Hibernian Hall}

September 20, 2011

“Go away, Irene!”… I’m sure that was the song going through Anne Marie and Edward’s heads in the week leading up to their wedding. Hurricane Irene had her eye set on Charleston at one point and there’s not much worse than not knowing whether or not she was going to hit Charleston on their wedding day. I got a call on Monday of that week from Kristin Newman Designs inquiring about my hurricane policy. My feeling was, if Anne Marie and Edward were going to be here come Irene or high water, I would be too. And in worse case scenario, I’d be happy to reschedule for a better day.

Luckily for us, Irene took a turn and we ended up with pleasant weather all things considered. Kristin Newman Designs put together a stellar day for Anne Marie and Edward and their guests. After their ceremony at Bethel United Methodist, children bearing pendants lead they way as they exited the church doors and were showered with rose petals. It was quite a moment.

Guests were received at Hibernian Hall and enjoyed a cocktail hour with an amazing selection of cheese and charcuterie. (originally, the cocktail hour was to have take place at the Confederate Home. Unfortunately, plans had to change due to the potential of hurricane Irene). A seated dinner followed upstairs in Hibernian Hall and long tables filled the room with the tink’ling of glasses, warm candlelight and flower designs by Gathering were everywhere. Cru Catering served a four course meal followed by the cutting of the incredible and stunning rosette wedding cakes by Jim Smeal.

The party continued downstairs to the ever popular and hugely talented, Quiana Parler! I am always thrilled when I see Quiana Parler and her band taking the stage, she’s a class act. Towards the end of the night, a conga line formed and lead guests outside to wish Anne Marie and Edward off into their new life. As a surprise to her dad, Anne Marie decided to use his El Camino as the “get away” car. He had been suggesting it all along, though he never thought she’d actually use it. Also there for the grand exit were their two dogs! It was quite an exciting moment.

Congratulations Anne Marie & Edward!!!

Smitten: The Lookbook of Wedding Fancy Issue 2

September 20, 2011

I am so proud to share the news that the latest issue of Smitten is out! Billed as the “Lookbook of Wedding Fancy”, this issue features weddings from around the world. We’re talking weddings from New Zealand, to Maui to one incredible wedding that Jennifer Bearden and I photographed at Claxton Farm in Asheville, NC this past summer.

Also included in this latest issue is a fashion shoot I did with Maddison Row, Charleston’s “world class boutique”, as Town & Country calls them. We donned 10 models in couture gowns by Anne Bowen, Vera Wang and Carol Hannah with styling by the talented Hollie Wood Style.

Lastly, don’t miss another one of my favorite collaborations, photos of Stems‘ stems! The “other ” Anne Bowen, brilliant flower designer and owner of Stems Charleston, dishes on some of her fall picks.

You can read it all here!

Anne Marie’s Bridal Portrait {Lowndes Grove}

September 19, 2011

I am knee-deep in editing the wedding images of one of the most gorgeous brides to cross my camera. This girl is beautiful inside and out and an absolute dream to photograph. Kristin Newman Designs styled her wedding to Edward so perfectly, but you’ll have to wait a week or so for those photos!

But here is the glamorous Anne Marie with one of her favorite family members, that’s right! One of her pups. We did her bridal portraits at Lowndes Grove for its stunning architecture and backdrop. Heather, of Gathering Events + Design, made Anne Marie’s bouquet and the flower collars for the pups. She found her dress at Maddison Row and it had the wonderful shoulder caps that you could add or remove. Isn’t she gorgeous?

Good Morning!

September 12, 2011

Happy Monday morning to you! Here’s a pop of color to add a little sunshine to your day. I took this photo out at Magnolia Plantation last week just before doing a bridal portrait for the very lovely Erin McBride. No sneak peek of her photos, you have to wait until after the wedding!

Week 9: The Weeks Pass Slowly but the Year Flew By

September 9, 2011

Awww… the toothless grin! I remember a year ago this time well as my “maternity leave” was winding down and I was going beck to shooting weddings. I definitely geared up and powered through it, but I get exhausted just thinking about it. I’m definitely one of those people who puts blinders on and trudges on through difficult situations and it is only when I am far removed do I allow myself to realize just how taxing it was. I suppose they call that “survival”!

I would always take some extra photos of you with my camera and the iPhone before I left for the day so that I could scroll through them and see your cherub face if I ever got any downtime. It’s a miracle anyone survives new parenthood!

The Engagement Session: How to Get the Best Photos at Your Engagement Session

September 8, 2011

In preparation for your engagement shoot, I thought you might enjoy reading a few of my favorite tips and words of advice for getting the best photos possible.

The biggest goal is for you to have fun. The best photos come out of the moments when you stop worrying about how to look and relax into the moment instead. Or as Marilyn Monroe said, “If you can make a girl laugh, you can make her do anything.”

People love to know… what should I wear?! This is by far the most common question, but I think that the most important thing is that you feel like “you” in whatever you wear. Whether it’s Louboutins or Levis, it’s nice to have your clothes speak to your personalities.

Something that I’ve found is fun to do and gives a good variety of photos is to have you do a wardrobe change halfway through. You can start with something a little dressier and then change into something more casual. Also, you might want to think about doing a hair and makeup trial run before the big wedding day. (And make sure to make reservations for dinner after the shoot seeing that you’ll be all dressed up and have lots of funny moments to talk about!)

I would stay away from outfits that you are constantly having to adjust or that just don’t fit well. Otherwise, you’ll be more focused on that than having fun. It’s also nice to coordinate with each other, but without being identical twins.

–Dressy–

–Casual–

The second most popular question is where to do the engagement session. Here are a few ideas for you to think about:

• If you are having a destination wedding in Charleston, you might be looking to show of a slice of Charleston’s cobblestone street aesthetic. I love scouting downtown for great backdrops and streets to photograph on and am happy to take you on a little walking tour of my favorite spots. Think huge oaks, incredible downtown houses with fantastic iron work, cobblestone streets and the harbor.

• Perhaps you’d rather get out of the city and head to one of the plantations instead. Boone Hall is one of my favorites as it has a great variety of backdrops for your engagement photos. There’s a whole allee of oaks over a dirt road that is quintessential Charleston. Then there are the award winning gardens, horses and the Cotton Dock, which is a rustic building right on the water.

• Or…. maybe YOU have something in mind. I am always happy to explore new territory or some up with ideas based around what you two like to do. Maybe you prefer to make it more of a date with me, your photographer, tagging along to get some charming moments with out being conspicuous. We could head out on a boat,  grab cocktails or attend a cooking class. It doesn’t matter as long as we’re having fun!

Engagement photos aren’t just for announcing your engagement in the paper anymore.

There are lots of clever and creative ideas that we can incorporate in to your photo session so that you can use these photos through out your wedding. One great idea is to use your photos for your Save the Date cards. Why not have the American Theater announce your wedding date on their marquee?

Or my favorite ways to put your engagement photos to use is to create a sign-in album for guests to write in at your wedding. This makes for an incredible conversation piece and its an amazing way to go down memory lane. Feel free to ask me about this, I’d love to put one together for you.
