Isle of Palms Beach Wedding: Jean and Jason

August 27, 2012

I love beach weddings, especially when they are small and intimate and full of fun-loving people like Jean and Jason and their families. They had decided to have a small ceremony on the beach here and then have a larger reception in Michigan in few weeks. Twice the celebrations, twice the fun!

For their wedding ceremony, Jason and Jean rented a beach house on the Isle of Palms. They were married on the beach directly in front of it, where the waves crashed and the sun shone as they said their “I do’s”.

Missie McCoy coordinated their event and made sure everything went to plan. After the ceremony, we took lots of fun photos out on the beach with the guys donning ray bans and the girls in aviators. We then traveled to historic downtown Charleston to take more photos with the wedding party among the cobblestone streets and old buildings. Afterwards, they celebrated with dinner at the Southend Brewery with their guests.

Congratulations Jean and Jason!

Jason’s mom pins his boutonniere on.

The gorgeous bride!

Jean’s bridesmaids were her two daughters and her sister

A wonderful backdrop!

Tatum the pug looked very dapper in his orchid.

I love this shot of these two in their sunglasses!

With smaller weddings, it’s fun to get a group shot of all the guests.

The guys. Classic.

We headed down to Waterfront Park for this great cobblestone street for more photos with Jean and Jason and the wedding party.

Their dinner reception for the guests was held at Southend Brewery in the heart of downtown Charleston.

Charleston Engagement Session: Alyson & Brian

August 23, 2012

I had a lot of fun photographing these two during their engagement session. I like to think of them as “The South meets New York City.” Based in NYC, they have city smarts and Southern charm, it’s an awesome combination.

I can’t wait for their wedding this fall!

Nelson Family : Isle of Palms

August 20, 2012

It is such an honor to photograph this adorable family that has been coming to the Isle of Palms on vacation year after year. I love marveling over how much the kids have grown and seeing their personalities come out. Four years and running, I hope to see you again in 2013!

St. Philips Church & Hibernian Hall Wedding: Mary Neil & Blake

August 14, 2012

I love a summer wedding, especially when it includes an adorable bride & groom like Mary Neil and Blake. Their wedding was full of tradition and family as it united her Charleston legacy with his South African/Scottish roots. They were married at St. Philip’s Church, one of Charleston’s most magnificent churches and the reception followed at Hibernian Hall.

Mary Neil got ready at her mom’s house and I think there is something really special about being surrounded by things that are familiar.

Mary Neil’s sister, Lizzie, was the maid of honor and helped her put on their grandmother’s veil.

Oaks and spanish moss- the perfect backdrop to a Charleston wedding.

Her maids all wore dresses from LulaKate, I love the one-shoulder petal tie!

Mary Neil and her mom

A bride and her dog. The sweetest thing ever!

St. Philip’s is one of the most amazing (and photogenic)  churches in Charleston. It’s such an honor to photograph a wedding there.

We did some family portraits before the ceremony and here is the lovely McKie family.

The handsome groom, Blake

I love this groomsmen shot.

This image melts my heart. You can feel the love of a mother for her son and the respect of a son for his mom.

Waiting…

Lots of proud moments for the father of the bride (and flower girl)!

Congratulations!

The wedding party on Chalmers Street

On to the reception!

Hibernian Hall at night

It was a very fun night of dancing!

Their grand send off was awesome! After being showered with flower petals, they hopped into a powder blue convertible Mustang.

Bon voyage!

Fort Family Beach Portrait: Folly Beach

August 13, 2012

Photographing on the beach is one of the best perks about living in beautiful Charleston. I was daydreaming the other day after reading a NYTimes article about couples taking a photographer along with them on their honeymoon. I was imagining creating a business where couple took me on their family vacations as a personal photographer. Just as I was getting mired in the technicalities of how exactly that would work, I realized that that’s exactly what I already do! I live in what Conde Nast Traveler’s has crowned THE top U.S. city, beating out my old flame, San Francisco. I already photograph families on vacation and have the luxury of sleeping in my own bed at night.

Thus, I happily introduce to you the Fort family, whom I thoroughly enjoyed photographing recently out on Folly. They were here on vacation with a side trip to the PGA thrown in. Their kids make me smile and I hope these photos bring back wonderful memories for years to come!

The Birthday Cake

August 11, 2012

This post is all about birthday cake.

We spent the last week of July up in the mountains of NC vacationing with the Webber side of the family. There are a disproportionate number of Leos in our family, Seamus and me included, and we found time in one week to celebrate 4 out of 5 of those birthdays. (Leo #5 couldn’t be there that week, otherwise we could have spent 5 out of 6 nights eating cake!)

Bryan, Seamus and I slept in an RV for the week and we decided to have Seamus’ birthday party at the campground where we were staying. Getting to celebrate his birthday with family around was the best part. But the second best part was this awesome cake we got him from Lowes Foods. I had one of those surreal moments as I flipped through a book of laminated cake photos in the grocery store. I studied each of the sugary bright cake as I narrowed it down to one with a John Deere tractor.  I can remember so well doing that as a kid, picking out my own birthday cake, which usually came from Baskin Robbins. Those were always a treat. And here I was picking out Seamus’ cake and I was much more excited about it than he was.

I limited my expectations because I know how these things work. You pick out the most awesome thing in the book and then in reality, the cake you get is a mere nod to what you thought you were going to get. Or they spell your child’s name wrong. But in this case, I was pleasantly surprised. No Cake Wrecks for this one.

It’s really hard to be a parent/participant AND photographer. I multi-tasked myself to death trying to be a host, parent and photographer at the party. This isn’t a typical shot I would take, I’d normally be much closer to the action, but I kind of like it anyway.

That’s my boy! Sampling the icing while no one is looking.

Bryan did most of the cooking as he is a much better cook than I! I just pick out cakes.

The aftermath…

Sullivans Island Cutie

August 9, 2012

Any day I get to photograph a cutie pie like this on the beach is a good day. This precious little girl captured my heart back when she was nearly six months old and I photographed her in her pink room.

Three generations

Total heart breaker!

To top it off, her grandma make this precious little bubble for her.

Smitten : The 1 Year Anniversary Cover!

August 2, 2012

It’s here! The 1 year anniversary issue of Smitten has debuted.

I was thrilled to be asked to take the cover image for this issue. Ombre has been hot hot hot this year and our savvy creative director Becky Hoppmann wanted to honor that for the magazine’s one-year anniversary issue. Anne Bowen of Stems honed the palette and worked her sculptural skills to create this blanket of flowers on which to rest this plate form BHLDN and a tasty little number “1″, made by Ashley Bakery.

What do you think?!
