Edisto

August 24, 2010

Back before we had a baby, which now seems like eons ago, we spent a great week down at Edisto Beach with my family. Edisto is about 45 miles south of Charleston and is a sleepy little beach town with not a lot going on other than roadside vegetable markets and a tiny Piggly Wiggly in which to shop. There are actually a lot of beautiful back roads and hidden nooks to explore. But being a week away from having a baby, I wasn’t too adventurous on this trip.

Actually, being rather rotund altered my photographing abilities. I found myself unable to run in and out of the house all day, changing lenses and chasing the nieces and nephews around on the beach for photos as I normally do. Instead, I took lots of photos from the rocking chairs on the porch or from my beach chair. It was actually kind of fun being forced to do things differently.

I wish that I could go back to the beach now for another week with the family and baby Seamus. I’d like to sit on the rocking chair on the porch with him and take him down to the water at sunset for a dip. I suppose there’s always next year…

4th of July

July 5, 2010

After having family in town for most of the week, it felt a little strange for it just to be Bryan and I celebrating the 4th on our own. So we had an easy day doing all the things we like to do…

I snapped photos

Bryan did some climbing and I got to sit back and watch

Dogs dogs dogs!

I love how as the seasons change, the light that comes into the house changes too.

Grilling on the Weber

Diego was very curious of the grill, but it was about 120 degrees over there

Mmm! Dinner, nap and then fireworks!

I am a little bit behind, but I’ve been meaning to blog these photos of the delicious little bites that Canape created for a Spoleto SCENE party last week. Cindy created these tiny little works of art that were the  hors d’oeuvres.

On the menu:

Peach and tomato gazpacho, peach salsa and a basil chicken sausage skewer

Cornmeal shrimp, champagne vinegar slaw, roasted corn sauce

Prosciutto, peach and gorgonzola cigarettes (phyllo), dipped in balsamic glaze

Summer ratatouille cups with goat cheese mousse

Popcorn with bacon and smoked paprkia

Do those combinations make you drool or what? Yum! Canape caters for events, weddings, dinner parties and luncheons and she teaches classes! I highly recommend her for your next event.

Stems has been a busy spot recently with all the craze of the wedding season going on! In addition to weddings, events and various flower arrangements, Anne is also busy teaching classes. The class schedule is posted online here and people LOVE them! There’s still time to sign up, so feel free to call.

I took a few shots for Anne the other day and I believe these were for a bridal luncheon. Can you get over these incredible peonies?!

I sent out my “Photo of the Month” yesterday with a photo form my recent advertising photo shoot with Maine Cottage and thought that I’d follow it up with a blog post. I primarily photograph people, whether it’s of weddings, kids or events. But I must admit that I LOVED working with a stylist and gorgeous furniture and products. I’d love more projects like this. Anyone need their interiors photographed?

Here’s a bit of what I said in the email about the shoot…

“I’m always amazed at how one thing leads to another. The chain of events that make up our lives and connect us to all of our friends sometimes seems nebulous, but there’s nothing better than it coming full circle and getting to work with clients who have become friends!

My photographing for Maine Cottage was born out of photographing products for Skirt! Magazine for several years. I was thrilled to be asked to photograph the entire Charleston Symphony Orchestra Designer Showhouse that Maine Cottage designed for this year’s event. If you aren’t familiar with their furniture and style, check out their website. I’d love them to design my entire house, it just makes you happy to be around all of these bright and bold colors.

I enlisted the help of expert stylist, photo editor and all around prop extraordinaire, Maggie Kennedy, to help me with the job. We met on a photo shoot years ago and have been friends ever since. She is incredibly talented and you might know her as the photography editor for Garden & Gun Magazine.

I think we all had a blast working on this job not only because the house was gorgeous, but because it’s always fun to work with friends! You will see the photo below (and more!) in upcoming ads and catalogs for Maine Cottage.”

And a few of my favorite photos form the shoot are below.

The Road Not Taken

March 29, 2010

The Road Not Taken

by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I’ve come to realize that I have a thing for paths. (One of my other favorite shots is from my trip to Laos in 2008.) This is the path from Little Wategos beach to the most Easterly point of Australia in Arakwal National Park, Byron Bay.

Color, shape, texture, abstraction. Really, it’s the abstract color that I love.

All of these photos are of flowers in the Christchurch, NZ Botanical Garden.

To carry on with the theme of travel, I decided to post a few shots from my trip to the Middle East. I was traveling with a painter friend of mine, Rick Price, whom I met in San Francisco at a SCAD alumni party. Strangely enough, we hadn’t really known each other at SCAD, but we’d lived in the same apartment at different times in Savannah… a super cool apartment that overlooked River Street no less. Small world.

Anyway, we both had a thing for traveling and me being a photographer and he a painter, we thought we’d travel the Far East as artists. And seeing that this was the era before 9/11, the Middle East seemed wildly exotic and just safe enough to travel to. I’m glad we did as since then, it seems to have become less and less safe. Though I will say that at the time, my family was not keen on our travel plans.

The trip led us to Greece, Turkey, Israel, Jordan and Egypt. If I could, I would go back in a second to Istanbul, Jerusalem and Egypt for more photos, food and shopping. Yes, the art and history are amazing, but it’s the day-to-day culture that I really love exploring the most when I travel.

We took a felucca trip down the Nile and stopped at Elephantine Island, near Aswan, Egypt

I almost can’t believe that we actually did this, looking back 10 years later. We actually rode camels across the desert from Aqaba, Jordan to Sharm el-Skeikh, Egypt. The camels were led by a Jordanian man who spoke no English and he walked and we rode for three days. And there was some joke made about me being traded for a camel. Um… glad that didn’t happen.

Hey! It’s one of my first silhouette photos. I love taking these kinds of photos now. This is a zurna player in Turkey. The zurna is a lot like an oboe and uses a reed. It is a very Turkish instrument.

Ahh…. Jerusalem! That’s another place I’d like to go back to again. The food! the shopping! The mix of three very strong and temperamental religions! We experienced Ramadan, Hanukkah and Christmas all on this trip and if that doesn’t influence your opinion on organized religion, I’m not sure what will. This is the scene on the men’s side at the Wailing Wall.
