A few weekends ago, Bryan and I loaded up the kayaks with 18 liters of water, sleeping bags and a tent and headed out to Capers Island for the weekend. I’d never actually camped on the beach like this and I have to admit, it’s not easy. I’m not sure which is harder, the relentless sun baking your skin and spirit or the trillions of grains of sand that cover you and every single thing you own. Either way, it takes a strong constitution to stand up against the elements. I suddenly have a lot more sympathy for Gilligan and the castaways.

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom. There’s something very exotic about watching the sun set on an island and then falling asleep as you gaze up at the stars. Even better is waking just as the sun rises for a walk down an empty beach, that is all yours, with a camera. And there’s something to be said for having powered ourselves to Capers in kayaks.

There is a boneyard beach on Capers where palms and oaks are succumbing to the tide. It’s much like Hunting Island or Cumberland Island in that regard.

We were awoken Sunday morning to a thunderstorm rolling in. The rolls of thunder seem to go on forever when you are on a beach. There are no structures to stop the sound.

Here are a few of my favorite pics from the trip:

This was my view as I lay on the beach reading a Jodi Picoult novel.

Last night, the Spoleto SCENE members were invited to a pre-party for the performance of Don John. The Studio 54-style party was held at Charleston Green and Jeffrey Rhodes of Margo Kauffman Gallery helped to bring this party together. We have Jeffrey to thank for the topless men serving Blackberry Vodka drinks and champagne as well as the “decorate your own afro wig” area.

It was a lot of hobnobbing of the under-40 Spoleto SCENEsters. Those who didn’t get too crazy at the table of powdered sugar laid out as cocaine went on to see an awesome performance of Don John at the Memminger.

The bar was packed, not just for the drinks but also for the view.

This year. the theme for the Bedon’s Alley party was based on the opera, Louise. Thus, Bedon’s alley was turned into Bohemian Paris for the night.  As you entered, you could hear an accordion playing in the background and you were greeted with a table full of devilishly dangerous drinks of absinthe, sambuca, red bull and grenadine.

French films played on large screens over the party as guests walked along the alley, stopping for sweet and savory crepes, fresh cooked french fries and of course, French cheese. It is a highly coveted party to be invited to, especially as this is the last year of the Bedon’s Alley party, or so I hear.

If you couldn’t be there, here is what you missed:

On Tuesday, May 19, just before Spoleto officially began, some of Charles Wadsworth’s biggest fans gave him a farewell luncheon at McCrady’s. In fact Charles was the only man in a room full of female admirers who have all been wooed over the years by his charm and talent.

Mitchell Crosby of JMC Charleston helped to design this luncheon farewell for Charles and came up with the idea to include a tube of lipstick from Saks at each of the guests seats so that they could plant kisses on Charles. Also ont he table were photos of Charles from through out the years and were perfect for seeing how influential Charles Wadsworth has been to the Spoleto Festival over the years.

The luncheon was capped off with a performance by “Page Turner”, a former student of Charles’ and he, or rather “she”, was quite the entertainer!

One of my favorite parts of wedding photography is taking bridal portraits for brides. Over the course of the 1-2 hours we’re out taking photos, I get to know the bride’s movements, how she feels while being photographed, and find the best angles. I truly believe it’s a process to get a great portrait of someone. Initially, there’s that tension and uncomfortable feeling between subject and photographer as we don’t really know each other and taking someone’s photo can be an intimate process. On the technical side, I’m scrutinizing for the right background and the best light, and on the personal side I’m trying to make the subject feel comfortable with hopes that her true personality will come out.

I really enjoyed photographing Valerie shortly before her wedding. We began at The Cistern on the College of Charleston campus and found some beautiful spots with lots of green and of course the historic buildings. Then we headed out to Folly Beach for a few as the sun was going down. I have not photographed out at Folly a lot, though I know it’s a popular spot. But there were great wispy clouds in the sky and a nice ethereal feeling.

These are some of my faves:

Happy Memorial Day

May 26, 2009

I had an excellent Memorial Day weekend. It was packed with 5 Spoleto events to photograph, Valerie & JD’s wedding, a bridal portrait and an engagement session. By Monday, the busy-ness was all calming down and Bryan and I had a chance to grill out and put some of that mint to use by making mint juleps. Here are just a few pics.

Bella spent the afternoon drooling and waiting not-so-patiently to be thrown a grilled veggie.

Liz and Bladen were married last weekend in the consummate Southern wedding at Boone Hall Plantation. Stacey Fraunfelter of Red Letter Events put together a stunning weekend for these two and had every detail covered. The ceremony was held in front of the house at Boone Hall. After the ceremony, guest strolled down to the Cotton Dock for Firefly sweet tea vodka cocktails and the sunset. Annie of A New Leaf Studio did the flowers. Ashley Bakery made the most delicious wedding cake.

They had a large wedding party full of their friends and family and they arrived at Boone Hall in an historic trolley. Jebb and I had a wonderful time photographing their wedding. Here are a few of my favorite shots:

Liz wore a dress from the Gown Boutique on Daniel Island. They have a wonderful selection of designer dresses.

I had just gotten an inquiry from BRIDES Magazine asking me if I had any photos of grooms wearing fun socks. And I had none! So when I saw Bladen’s preppy argyles, I had to get a shot.

I don’t know how I got so lucky, but somehow I got on a streak of photographing some really fun Carolina Tarheel grad’s weddings this past year! I think my name got bounced around and keep it bouncing as Carolina girls are lots of fun! (I should know, I was a UNC girl once myself, though only for a semester before I transferred to SCAD.)

Courtney and Pete had an early evening ceremony at Lowndes Grove on a gorgeous Saturday in May. They decided to see each other before the ceremony so that they could go ahead and take as many of the group shots before the ceremony as they could. Courtney and Pete had their own private rendesvous on the balcony to see each other for the first time on their wedding day. This meant that after the ceremony, there were only a handful of photos to take and they could enjoy the cocktail hour. I loved this and I think it relieves a lot of the stress the bride and groom feel about wanting to get to the reception as soon as possibe.

Sara Cavallon of Something to Celebrate was the wedding coordinator and she is always fun to work with. I’ve never met a coordinator so un-stressed.

I snapped a few shots of Courtney getting ready inside of the house at Lowndes Grove. I love how excited she was!

In March, I had the pleasure of taking Courtney Guildford’s bridal portrait at Lowndes Grove, where she and Pete were married two weekends ago.Since the wedding has already happened, I wanted to show you some of my favorite shots from the bridal portrait! And in a day or two, I will post photos from their weddig, so stay tuned.

This is one of my all time favorite dress shots. I love how it shows the intricate detail and beading.
