Archive for December, 2009

I love December weddings. There’s always an extra element of excitement and festivity in anticipation of Christmas. Huge Christmas trees glowing with the scent of pine make the heart swell. But the true beacons of this night were Charles and Blair, whose Charleston wedding took place on December 12, 2009.

There was something incredibly special about seeing Blair’s face light up when Charles was around. She is such a sweet and thoughtful girl and when you add Charles and his fun-loving sense of humor and playful antics, you’ve got a powerful connection between two people. And nothing could get this couple down on their wedding day. Not the rain, not transistors blowing and knocking out the organ, not even the wedding crashers!

The wedding took place at the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. It was a full house, packed with well-wishing guests from South Carolina, Texas and England. In fact Charles is English, but has lived in the US for many years. Blair’s father and step-father both walked her down the aisle. I thought that was really special.

The reception followed at Hibernian Hall with Plane Jane doing what they do best, making people dance like crazy. The food was catered by Duvall. Here are some of my faves.

Plane Jane rocks! They are an awesome cover band and I highly recommend them!

This cake is awesome. Charles, though born in England, grew up in Texas. And it’s where Blair and Charles now reside.

Skirt! “Team Girl Power”

December 21, 2009

Each month, Skirt! Magazine has a feature called Girl Power. This is where a local girl, under 18, is highlighted in the magazine. Past issues have celebrated young artists, fund raisers, activists, athletes, and all around cool kids. For instance, this month’s issue (Dec. 09) features a bad ass girl who does jui jitsu and other martial arts. Check it out, she’s amazing!

I always love teaming up with Margaret Pilarski, Skirt! Charleston’s assistant editor, to interview and photograph these amazing girls. Today we met up with another girl with big and wonderful dreams who we are featuring in 2010. I won’t show you the official Girl Power photo… you’ll have to pick up a Feb. 2010 issue of Skirt! to see that! But I couldn’t resist taking a fun shot of Margaret as she conducted the interview. She’s the best!

Christmas Tradition

December 18, 2009

Every year on Christmas morning, with out fail, we eat grapefruit as part of our Christmas breakfast. It probably started as a way to get through that huge box of citrus fruits my uncle would send us from Florida. Now it’s become part of our Christmas tradition. Regardless, I  have a fondness for grapefruit, especially when someone cuts it for me.

I have some exciting news to share with everyone! Leigh Webber Photography is moving to a new space right in the heart of the Charleston Wedding Corridor! The new location is at 41 Cannon Street, right at the corner of Cannon and Coming Streets, across from Five Loaves Cafe. You probably recognize Anne Bowen’s new flower boutique, Stems, which is opening soon. Anne has renovated the building and turned that ugly duckling into an amazing space. I am thrilled to be able to share it with her!

I have an appointment this morning to get a sign made to hang out front, so that should be coming soon. And as of January 1, this will be our new location, so come on by!

A Year Ago Today…

December 14, 2009

For anyone who knows me, you know that travel is part of my identity. It started innocently, with trips around the 48 continental US states with my family growing up and at some point it turned into an international obsession. I took the rite of passage trip to Europe after college, with a backpack and Eurorail pass in tow. Over the new millennium, I traveled through the Middle East and experienced Ramadan, Christmas and Hanukkah, right in the heartland of each of these religions. This was back when Bin Laden was still in his planning stages and I was blissfully unaware. I think the defining trip that changed things for me was a 3-month trip to India and SE Asia, where a friend and I had obtained sponsorship from Nikon and were hired to write about traveling with a digital camera, which was new stuff back in 2001!

For me, foreign travel is like being on a sabbatical, where my sole focus is to take in the sights and culture and to document my journey with photos and words. Being focused on capturing and processing the experience as I go is incredibly invigorating. Leaving behind the cell phone and day-to-day worries and insignificances is the icing on the cake.

This is a long introduction to say that I am reminiscing about my trip to SE Asia, a year ago this time. My original plan was to meet up with Ida Becker and her U Truth Project. When at the last minute, that didn’t work out, I found myself with a plane ticket, plans made and an opportunity to travel solo for 3 weeks. I took it. It was the longest time I’d ever spent traveling alone and it became very introspective to say the least as 2009 had been a defining year in many aspects of my life.

I recently read about Vicente Wolf, a modern designer, photographer and traveler, who takes 7 weeks during December/January to travel each year. It’s a slower time for his business and he uses the time and travel to be reinvigorated, explore and refresh those creative juices. I love that! I want to make travel an annual recalibration process for me. There’s nothing like 3 weeks of being alone in foreign countries to get back to the roots of who you really are.

Looking back on my photos, I am reminded once again of their power to bring back a flood of memories. I was so incredibly wired when we landed in Tokyo, where a missed connection meant I got to stay there for the night. I wanted to see and do as much as I could in my less than 24 hours there: take photographs, eat sushi, exchange dollars for yen, scour the 7/11 for crazy foods and packaging. I was on a creative high and I couldn’t sleep.

This is one of my favorite photos from my brief time in Japan. Japan was very clean and direct, just like this photo.

Cliche shot from the plane? Perhaps, but it’s also very iconic to me. We’d just flown past Mt. Fuji.

Just looking at this gets me excited thinking about all the possible places to go.

This is a kind of a depressing shot of my hotel room in Narita, Japan, but it reminds me of exactly how I felt. Up in the middle of the night, 3am and can’t sleep, excited but also a little lonely as I had no one to share it with.

Over the weekend, I was excited the photograph the marriage between Charles and Blair. These are two of the nicest people I’ve worked with and they have wonderful families that were thrilled to see them exchange vows. The blog post about their eventful, yet stress free wedding is coming.

But since they are now happily married and headed off on a wonderful honeymoon in Mexico, I can show you a few photos from Blair’s bridal portrait session which took place down at Waterfront Park in historic Charleston. You may think that Blair is smiling in these photos, but wait until you see the photos of her and Charles together! That boy REALLY makes her smile.

I love the light coming down this awesome cobblestone road and lighting up Blair!

Now that we’re into December, I am heading into the holiday season full blast! I’m making lists for not only things I want (can you say Nikon D3S?), but  also a list of goals for 2010. One of the things on that list is to share a “Photo of the Month” with all of you through out 2010.

In the spirit of starting 2010 off with a bang and to end 2009 on a high, I decided to debut our “Photo of the Month” series a little bit early. December 2009′s featured photograph honors the kick off to the “engagement season”, these loved up months around the holidays when many couples get engaged.

Here’s to all of you brides (and grooms!) hoping that he (or she) pops the question and may you have a smile as big as Suzy’s is in December’s “Photo of the Month”. (You can see more about Robert and Suzy’s wedding in this blog post). Send me an email if you’d like to be put on our mailing list so you never miss the “Photo of the Month”!

We wish you a wonderful holiday season full of parties, presents and photographs!
