The Local Palate Magazine: An Independent Feast

July 12, 2012

I was beyond excited when Jennifer Hitchcock at The Local Palate contacted me about photographing their entertaining feature for the July/August issue of this gorgeous food magazine. They are based out of Charleston, but focus on the “food culture of the south”, which is brimming with energy.

The entertaining feature, “An Independent Feast” was styled by Magda Pelzer of Vieuxtemps and the menu was created by John Zucker of Cru Cafe and Cru Catering, whom I get to enjoy at many of the weddings I shoot.

There were some extra delicious Firefly sweet tea vodka cocktails on hand, but sadly I missed taste testing those that day. We shot at a stunning property on James Island and I was ready to move onto their boat after the shoot it was so scenic.

Enjoy the photos and go grab a mag!

Surprise Birthday Party at O’ku

February 2, 2012

Last weekend, I had a fun opportunity to photograph a party at O’ku. It was a surprise 50th birthday party and all I know is that I hope I have as many friends and family who love me enough to throw such a rockin’ party one day. This one was full of sake toasts, photos and lots of laughs.

Large canvas prints hung throughout the restaurant showing photos from throughout the years. Stacey Fraunfelter and Missie Parker of Red Letter Events were at the help and worked with the lovely ladies at Stems to create tablescapes that fit in perfectly with the Japanese aesthetic of O’ku.  Specialty linens, custom menu cards by Scotti Cline Designs and orchids upon orchids filled the space.

After delicious cocktails such as the Sugar and Spice martini, guests sat down to a 5-course dinner. Toasts followed as did a great sparkler cake topper that sparkled “50″.  Happy Birthday!

Setting the scene… Planning and decor by Red Letter Events and flowers by Stems.

Mmmmm…..! Menu cards by Scotti Cline Designs

I loved watching the kitchen work and meticulously put together the edible works of art

I especially loved the little Zen rock gardens filled with orchids and the tilted vases held by little bamboo structures that Stems made.

“The Wedding Hangover”

October 4, 2011

I’m not sure who coined the phrase, but this past Sunday, I was definitely suffering from a “wedding hangover.” No… this doesn’t mean that I was throwing a few back at the wedding I photographed last Saturday! The “wedding hangover” is total exhaustion that that we photographers (and I’m sure other wedding professionals) feel the day after the wedding.

You see, on the wedding day, we spend the entire day on our feet, constantly “on” mentally and physically, looking for the next shot. It’s a wonderful rush of adrenaline and excitement. But usually by the time I get home on a Saturday night, my ears are ringing and I am hobbling around, looking for the couch. I almost always have dreams about the wedding, sometimes they are full of anxiety over shots I’ve imagined that I’ve missed. And I usually wake up in the pre-dawn hours eager to download the photos and to back them up several times before I can get on with the day.

Sunday morning was no exception this past weekend. The only difference was that it was chilly, the season’s had actually changed. After 5 months of summer, the air was crisp and cool. The sun was coming in through a different window and it lit up the counter with my coffee and fruit salad. This is Sunday morning at its best.

I channeled my inner Helene Dujardin and took this photo. Ahhhh….. Every morning should start this way.
