Lowcountry Dog Cover

February 20, 2013

I believe that my first love had to be dogs.

I’ve had them my entire life and I can not imagine living without them!

So of course I jumped at the chance to photograph for Lowcountry Dog magazine.

The cover story is on big and little dogs and let me tell you what, each of these pups had the most incredible personalities. And they were totally loved by their owners. it was such a treat to go from photogrpahing a tee-tiny 2.5 lb. chihuahua to a 250+lb. mastiff. The yorkie cracked me up with her ears and then the great danes, whoa! A pair of them came together and they took up half the studio.

Grab it on the stands now! It’s free and you can find it in all the awesome dog stores around Charleston and Harris Teeter, to name a few.

Lucy the Dog

December 19, 2012

This blog post is really all about Lucy, Meredith and Justin’s adorable little chihuahua mix. She was suppose to make her modeling debut in their wedding photos, but hurricane Sandy didn’t allow that plan. So, we decided to do a little photo shoot after the wedding where she could be the star and I could capture photos of the three of them.

Perhaps it’s because I used to have a chihuahua myself, but Lucy and I instantly warmed to each other and I didn’t even get a growl from her. She was quite the little lady and responded well to all my silly sounds. Anyone with pets knows that they are full bred members of the family and should be loved and cared for as such. Lucy was no exception and I think she is enjoying living the good life with her sweet and generous owners.

Merry Christmas!

Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hound Blog : Keswick Hall

July 3, 2012

Ok, so for your bucket list on things you must do in this lifetime, you need to add “Running of the Hounds”. It was one of the most fun and memorable things I’ve experienced in a long time. Leave it to Anne and Dave to introduce us all to that adventure at Keswick.

On the morning of their wedding, guests had the option to come enjoy the running of the hounds. We really had no idea what to expect, especially when somewhere around 70 dogs greeted us outside the hotel. It was controlled chaos. They were fantastically trained and there were several trainers (and corgi’s) keeping the hound dogs in line. But within the group, there was all sorts of madness going on- lots of territory marking and the like.

One of the best moments was when they ran down the hill into the pond to cool off. They then led us on a walk through the hills and we all followed with perma-grins on our faces.

Little White Dog

March 15, 2012

I came across this photo of Diego today when I was making room on my computer for all the upcoming weddings I am about to shoot. It’s funny, for a second I wasn’t sure if I’d shot it or not. Then, I realized it was my little chihuahua who had to go live elsewhere after Seamus came along. I miss this little guy sometimes even if it did hurt when he bit me.

Seeing this photo inspired me this afternoon when I was out in the yard with Seamus and my camera. It made me get down on the ground and frame some images with the grass. More of those coming soon!

If the Dew Zoo doesn’t put you in a good mood, I don’t know what will. Love these guys!

A Boy and his Dog

December 16, 2011

Let me make sure you know all about the “velcro dog” called a Vizsla. They did not get that description for naught. This is Bella and she must be snuggling with one of her tribe at all times.Truth be told, it can drive you crazy. She totally has us trained to share the duvet and any blankets that may be on the couch for snuggling. I remember picking her up from the breeder and being warned not to give in, not even once, to any comfort that I didn’t want to then provide her forever and ever, amen. So so true and I have failed miserably at this.

She follows this little boy around constantly, making sure her nose is within his reaching distance so she can shoot out her tongue and give him a quick lick at a moment’s notice. I’ve even seen her pen him down with licks and I concede, that’s a bit much. Outside is her collection of toys she’s stolen from the poor kid. Dirt covered stuffed animals, wooden blocks, legos. She does not destroy them, just collects them. Thank goodness the washing machine is in between the backyard and the toy bin.

On the flip side, Seamus will surely grow up with a trusty companion by his side, in his face, and breathing down his back. He’s learned to do the duck and roll to escape her kissing tongue and sometimes I wonder if he thinks he’s a dog too as he opens his mouth and sticks out his tongue to kiss her back.

Bella Says…

December 13, 2011

My dear friend Rebecca had a horrible thing happen to two of her dogs. They were shot. Yes, that’s right… shot. Luckily, both survived and are doing well, though they’ve been through a lot. One has had to have extensive  medical care including daily sedation to clean a wound. It makes me hurt thinking about it.  They were running on their own private property where they were most likely shot by a frustrated hunter who happened to also be trespassing.

The idea of a dog being purposely shot is hard to fathom. Then it dawned on my that I had a dog who was shot when I was 12. She was (most likely) chasing a truck in the neighborhood and they shot her in the leg, shattering the bone. I can remember my mom coming to see me at school to ask me if I wanted to have her put down or to have her leg amputated. My answer was obvious… amputate! Snickers went on to have a litter of puppies and was an amazing 3-legged dog.

Anyway… all this is to explain this photo of Bella, my velcro vizsla, who was obviously not thrilled that I was giving away that bag of tasty treats to Rebecca’s poor pups who are convalescing. You can just see the sadness in her eyes but don’t let her fool you, she’s as spoiled as they get.

Featured in Lowcountry Dog!

February 23, 2011

I am a huge dog lover and have had dogs my entire life. So of course I am always picking up the latest issue of Lowcountry Dog magazine. Well it was sure my lucky day when the editor, Leah England, wrote me to see if I’d be interested in being featured in “Fido’s Friends”. YES!

In addition to answering some fun questions, she asked for a few photos of me and my dogs. I took this challenge to heart and decided to do a whole family photo with the three dogs and our new baby. We set up the tripod and self timer and shot away.A gajillion shots later, we got this one!

You can read the article and see the entire magazine here. If you’d like a free copy of Lowcountry Dog, they can be found at Harris Teeter and all the dog stores (among other places) in Charleston, SC.

Charlie & Georgia {Dog Portraiture}

February 22, 2011

I had a fun job to do this past Sunday. I headed down to Kiawah to take photos of Charlie and Georgia, two very charming and well behaved shih tzus that were down for a winter break from Toronto.

These are two very lucky dogs who are going to have their portrait painted by the super talented Steve Morrell. He is an artist represented through Dog and Horse Fine Art Portraiture and he needed photos of these dogs form which he could paint.

We took all sorts of angles and close ups and beach shots. I am hoping he will have a lot of material to work from and to capture the dogs’ personalities. Here are a few of my favorite shots of Charlie & Georgia.

Baby’s Bum

January 16, 2011

This is an oldie’ but goodie. I found it as I was scrolling through my “keep” folder, where I put random pics and files that I like. It’s mostly a collection of stuff I find on the web, but also a few shots of my own.

I came across this one this photo one morning and had to laugh. Look at that precious baby bum! This photo was taken for Lowcountry Dog a couple years ago for an issue of babies and puppies. I might have to do an updated version with my own baby’s bum sometime soon.
