Smitten {The Look Book of Wedding Fancy}

August 3, 2011

Well, well, well! Our favorite Charleston wedding blog, The Wedding Row, has outdone itself! Did you hear? They now have an e-glossy called Smitten!

The indomitable force behind their latest endeavor is the multi-talented Della MacNicholas. Della and I met when she was first starting The Wedding Row and it has been amazing to watch it grow exponentially since. (There is now The Wedding Row Charlotte, The Wedding Row Kentucky and The Wedding Row Georgia!)

I am thrilled to be included in the premier issue starting with the cover image! (wow.) There is also an article I’ve written in there called, “Wedding Photography: A Brief History” that chronicles the history of wedding photography and styles from its inception. That was a lot of fun to research and did you know wedding photographers used to work on speculation?

One of my favorite weddings from this Spring is included as well! Scott and Ann had their reception in one of the coolest spots, the Brick House Ruins on Edisto Island, SC. It’s a magical little place, tucked away on private land, but what a place!

Go and see it in its entirety here and get ready for issue #2, I hear it’s in the works!

I Like… Blogging Your Way

March 14, 2011

I use to teach Photoshop classes at the Center for Photography , here in Charleston, SC. I remember one of my students, Marty Whaley Adams, telling me that each January, she embarked on some new adventure or class to start the year off right. Every new year, I think about that, get a little introspective and find myself thinking about what class I could take.

Through the power of Twitter and my hopeless addiction to it, I found out that Holly Becker, the talented dame behind Decor8, was hosting a blogging class with Leslie Shewring called, “Blogging Your Way“. Without any hesitation, I signed right up. We are two weeks into the class and it has my wheels turning. I am outlining topics and features to come.

I want my blog to be more than just a recap of what I’ve shot in the past week because I think that gets boring for all 5 of you out there that read it. Are there more? Instead, I plan to start featuring…

1. What inspires me… artists, books, food, people, the cream of the crop.

2. The Featured Photo: a behind-the-scenes look at special photos from weddings, what the story was and the technicalities of “getting the shot”.

3. 52 Weeks: I’m 7 months in to a year long project I’ve been working on. Now it’s time to start showing you the progress, week by week.

4. Industry insider point of view: My take on the photo industry, trends and all.

5. Word to Live By… and other favorite quotes.

Lastly, because I am a visual person, I must leave you with this photo, which is all about FOCUS!

Order Among the Chaos

October 1, 2009

My personal life and my professional life as a photographer are so intertwined that I’m not sure where one ends and the other begins. Photography has become a means both of expressing and understanding myself. In the words of Minor White, “All photographs are self-portraits.” So true.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking recently, trying to come up with a succinct way of defining both “who I am” and my photographic style. I’ve learned that having a good idea of your values and goals helps weed out all the unnecessary distractions. It also helps you focus a bit more sharply on your goals because you know what you want. (Yes, even my metaphors are photography based.)

I am constantly bookmarking blogs, flipping through magazines and following links and references on designers and photographers to read about. I enjoy following the trends, taking note of the marketing, and letting myself be inspired by the few out there that are doing something remarkable.

But occasionally, I get down about it all. Not only in the world of wedding and kid’s photography, but in many genres, it’s all become so trendy… everything looks the same and it’s all been done before.

I want to stand out, to represent something without being led by the masses. That’s a tall order in today’s world.

I think the old adage that “A camera does not make a photographer” should be updated to “An action/preset (in Photoshop/Lightroom) does not make a photographer”. In this open source world, nothing is sacred anymore. You hardly need an education, much less experience to claim you are a photographer.

It is the person behind the camera + the subject that = the photograph. Every photo is enriched when there is a story to go behind it, and so is every photographer. Here’s to a little soul searching today.
