Charleston Engagement Session: Joanna & Will

October 22, 2012

I had so much fun photographing one of the cutest couples ever for their engagement session recently. We met at the Dock Street Theatre and did a little walking photo tour of Charleston with photos in cute little nooks along the way. I love that they included their pup in a few. It’s hard not to smile around a little fluffball like Daisy!  I’m can’t wait for the wedding!

Lowndes Grove Wedding: Katie & Kyle

October 16, 2012

Katie and Kyle had a sweet and intimate wedding a few weeks ago at Lowndes Grove. There is a reason that Lowndes Grove is featured in every wedding magazine. Between the historic house and the riverside property, it is one of the most photogenic venues in Charleston. Katie and Kyle wanted to make sure to soak up the gorgeous venue and I took photos of them throughout the house and grounds.

After their ceremony under the trees and with a view of the Ashley River, guests had cocktails and enjoyed walking out on the pier. The festivities continued under twinkling lights and later, they enjoyed a sit down dinner under the tent.

Congratulations Katie and Kyle! Thanks for having us there!

A Wedding at Planters Inn

October 7, 2012

Some of my favorite weddings to photograph are the more intimate ones where only the closest of family and friends are invited. For Tensley and Harley, they preferred to think of their wedding as a cocktail party, with a ceremony thrown in.

Guests arrived to the Planters Inn and were greeted with champagne and hors d’oeuvres, which is the perfect way to put guests at ease. Red Letter Events was on hand to make sure that the evening ran smoothly and welcomes to Charleston as almost every guest was from out of town. A wedding at Planters Inn is not complete with out one of the famous coconut cakes form the Peninsula Grill. Delish!

The gorgeous flowers were by Lotus Flower

A view looking over the ceremony site, which unfortunately had to be moved inside at the last minute due to rain.

Charleston Engagement Session: Rachel & Jason

September 5, 2012

I love it when everything comes together for a perfect engagement session. We’d had to reschedule once already due to rain a few weeks ago. But I’m glad we did as the day we chose over Labor Day weekend was absolutely perfect. (Well… maybe it was a little hot, but we’ll take that over rain!)

Rachel and Jason are excited to bring their guests to Charleston and they wanted their photos to really highlight the feel of our city and show off what Charleston is known for- incredible oaks and amazing historic architecture.

Speaking of… did you know that Charleston has a high response rate (saying, YES!) for the weddings held here?! Of course it does!

Second Presbyterian Church & William Aiken House Wedding: Emalie & Christian

July 13, 2012

Emalie and Christian’s Charleston wedding was one that celebrated not only the two of them, but also their family and friends. Their siblings made up their intimate wedding party, which is an incredibly special thing as you go from the family you grew up in into this new union.

It was such a pleasure to work with Melissa Barton of A Charleston Bride, who coordinated and designed their wedding. She transformed the William Aiken House and created an outdoor dance floor where guests danced under the stars. The band, ATL Groove Factory set up over the koi pond. It’s amazing how many different ways the William Aiken House can be used!

Emalie has an effortless glamour about her and looked stunning.

I love this one of Emalie and her sister as they got ready at the Planters Inn

Her sister was the matron of honor

During their ceremony, their pastor had them each turn and look to the congregation to see how much love they were surrounded by.

Christian’s brother served as his best man

The youngest guest!

The wedding party. I love all the love in this shot.

Mr. & Mrs. Shea!

The light in the bride’s suite at the church has the most amazing light. These two siblings did excellent jobs as the flower girl and ring bearer.

Photos in the red room at the William Aiken House.

My favorite part of the evening, as a photographer, was photographing their first dance. It took place under the most gorgeous late afternoon light.

Sally Watts, who photographed with me that day, took this great detail shot of the set-up upstairs.

Sally also took this shot. I love seeing how other photographers capture the William Aiken House. It really is a stunning building and each room has its own charms.

This indoor seating area was perfect for guests to use and escape the heat.

The wedding cake was created by Fish and is encircled with a garland of gold leaves. Love it!

I’m a sucker for toasts. Christian’s brother gave one that had people laughing and crying, that’s the best kind.

TEC did the lighting for the reception. It’s amazing how they hang a chandelier!

The last song of the night, “Call Me Maybe?”!

And the credits go to…..

The Local Palate Magazine: An Independent Feast

July 12, 2012

I was beyond excited when Jennifer Hitchcock at The Local Palate contacted me about photographing their entertaining feature for the July/August issue of this gorgeous food magazine. They are based out of Charleston, but focus on the “food culture of the south”, which is brimming with energy.

The entertaining feature, “An Independent Feast” was styled by Magda Pelzer of Vieuxtemps and the menu was created by John Zucker of Cru Cafe and Cru Catering, whom I get to enjoy at many of the weddings I shoot.

There were some extra delicious Firefly sweet tea vodka cocktails on hand, but sadly I missed taste testing those that day. We shot at a stunning property on James Island and I was ready to move onto their boat after the shoot it was so scenic.

Enjoy the photos and go grab a mag!

Old St. Andrews Parish Wedding: Allison & Michael

June 13, 2012

Michael & Allison’s wedding was one I’d really been looking forward to. I think the excitement started when I did their engagement session earlier this year and really got a little insight into their personalities and decided that I like them, a lot! For starters, they are two of the nicest and genuine people I know. And in addition to being whip smart, they are laid back, funny and don’t take themselves too seriously. To totally top it off, they are big time dog lovers, need I say more?

The enlisted a good friend of theirs, Kelley Cannon of Kelley Cannon Events out of the DC area, to be their wedding planner. She was excellent. I had such a fun time working with her as she helped Michael and Allison with a million little touches that really personalized their wedding.

It was Memorial Day weekend, so as you may image, Charleston was hoppin! The wedding party got ready at the Francis Marion Hotel, where Michael and Allison decided to do a “first look”. It’s an incredibly sweet moment to witness. The wedding party then boarded  the trolly and we headed to Cannon Park for photos. It was the perfect spot that was totally Charleston, but without all the crowds.

Then, it was off to Old St. Andrews Parish for the ceremony, which is one of my favorite churches in all of Charleston. It has a long history, dating back to 1706 and is the oldest church in South Carolina.

Their guests were treated to a incredible reception at Magnolia Plantation along the Ashley River, photos form which you’ll get to see in tomorrow’s blog post! Until then, enjoy these highlights through their wedding ceremony.

One of the flower girls isn’t so sure about living in the lap of luxury as she has her nails and hair done simultaneously.

Our 21st century bride!

I love this photo that my second photographer Sally Watts captured of Allison and Michael’s first look.

Allison carried a bouquet of pink peonies and they were the perfect compliment to her dress.

We took photos of the wedding party in Cannon Park. These columns are left over from a former city museum.

Sally Watts took this photo of the girls helping Allison with the veil, gorgeous!

I love moments like these. Allison and Michael hug Michael’s mom as the flower girls look on.

This is another special photo, there is a lot of love in those smiles.

Off to the reception! Check in tomorrow for photos from dinner and dancing at Magnolia Plantation.

Charleston Family Portrait

June 5, 2012

Usually guests from out of town like to have their families photographed on the beach. But this wonderful family decided to have their photo session downtown, among all the great textures and architecture of historic downtown Charleston.

These kids were total troopers, following me through the streets as we looked for cobblestones and walls with texture and color. It makes me feel lucky to be a Charleston-ian and live among these wonderful buildings. What a fun shoot!
